History of the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra

The Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra has been enchanting audiences for more than 40 years with its electrifying performance style.

With its own style of interpretation, one that is characterized by spirit, vivacity and faithful rendition, the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra has also been able to win the hearts of people whose musical preferences previously did not include classical music.
Musicians from all over the world have made the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra their musical home, most advanced students of the Rhineland conservatories and prize winners at international competitions. Many and most successful concert tours abroad are continuously undertaken by the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra.
It is managed by Junge Philharmonie Köln e.V., a non-profit association which supports the orchestra's mission as a musical ambassador and promoter of peace and international understanding through the integration of numerous foreign young artists, who are living in Germany.

The Orchestra was founded in 1972. It is composed of graduates of the most important German Rhineland Conservatories. They are superbly gifted young players who, once they have finished their studies, wish to experience the reality of a practical musical life playing chamber music and symphonic repertory at the highest level before entering their careers as soloists or as members of some philharmonic orchestra. In the last decades, it has given thousands of concerts with different programs and with varying formations throughout the world.
In Germany, the Cologne New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra has realized 12 television programs and has recorded numerous records.
The Chamber Orchestra and its symphonic formation are both working always during their seasons, soloists of the Philharmonic group being the members of the chamber orchestra in over 100 concerts per year taking place in all parts of the world.
It's visiting almost every continent on earth has allowed their young musicians to gain vast experiences both as soloists and as orchestra players, which enables them to stand the test of concert performances for large audiences rising above themselves.

Volker Hartung assumed the position of chief conductor of the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986. He was trained in the tradition of German symphony orchestras and opera. Under the influence of the conductors Evgeny Mravinsky and Sergiu Celibidache, Hartung developed a unique understanding of the French, German and Eastern European musical traditions.
Under his guidance, the Cologne New Philharmonic orchestra has reached a world-class level and has become world-wide famous for his distinct performance style and popular success.
